Discord Threatens to Shut Down BotGhost Over Bot Token Usage

Date:

Many Discord users were alarmed when BotGhost, a popular service for creating Discord bots, received a formal notice from Discord threatening shutdown if major operational changes aren’t made by July 14. Discord is demanding BotGhost stop using bot tokens in its current implementation.

BotGhost argues its use of bot tokens is covered under Discord’s “Service Provider Exemption” and notes other major bot platforms still use similar methods without penalty. The staff highlighted that no viable alternatives were offered by Discord and the abrupt demand is causing frustration and uncertainty.

The warning comes after a serious vulnerability in BotGhost’s system—one that potentially impacted up to half of all Discord servers—was revealed. BotGhost managed the issue responsibly and says the shutdown threat is unrelated to the vulnerability, focusing solely on token usage policies. This disconnect has only fueled frustration among users.

On Reddit, users reacted strongly. One community member said:

“Discord is so stupid my 23k community loves BotGhost—if they get removed I’m fr quitting Discord and deleting my server.”
Another added:
“Honestly, even if Discord has its reasons, they’re handling it poorly. … It just feels unfair.”

BotGhost is now working to find a compromise and has restored some bot functions. They’re hopeful for a resolution that avoids complete shutdown and want Discord to apply its rules consistently across all developers.

This situation has sparked a broader debate about Discord’s approach to third-party bot platforms. Users and bots alike are watching closely—BotGhost’s response could determine whether cooperative developers stay on Discord or look elsewhere.

Let me know if you’d like headlines, a comparison with Discord’s token policies, or a guide for bot developers on alternative setups.
