New Discord Bug Causing Crashes During Voice and Video Calls

Date:

Many users are reporting a frustrating bug in Discord that’s leading to unexpected app crashes. The problem seems to pop up most often when people try to join voice or video calls. This issue isn’t isolated to one version of the app either. People using the desktop application, the web browser version, and even the mobile app have shared similar experiences.

The specific triggers for the crash vary somewhat. For some, the crash, displaying a “Well, this is awkward” error screen, happens immediately upon joining a direct message call. They noted that joining a call in a server without fully opening the voice channel screen works, but clicking into it fully causes a crash. Interestingly, users could still hear and talk to friends despite the crash screen being visible.

Another user suspects the issue is linked to video processing. They commented that enabling their camera or joining a call where another person’s camera is active would cause Discord to crash.

Users have been trying all the usual fixes. These include restarting their devices, reinstalling the Discord app, clearing the cache, updating drivers, and tweaking various in-app audio and video settings like hardware acceleration. Unfortunately, for many, these standard troubleshooting steps haven’t resolved the problem. One user shared their experience, stating that the app doesn’t crash instantly but rather when they try to open the call window, and that they tried every possible solution found online without success.

There might be a glimmer of hope with an unusual workaround. A few users discovered that changing Discord’s language setting from UK English to US English surprisingly fixed the crashing. One user mentioned that after changing the client from UK English to US English, it crashed once more and then magically fixed itself. Another user confirmed that this workaround worked for them as well.

Separately, some mobile users have reported a different crashing issue. Their Discord app unexpectedly closes when they try to view messages from blocked users. One user posted that Discord is experiencing issues with the mobile builds, and for some reason, trying to read blocked messages causes the app to crash.

Several other users also confirmed the same issue happening on their devices. One of them even shared a screen recording demonstrating the problem.

For now, many affected users are stuck, hoping Discord addresses these bugs in an upcoming update. While the language-setting workaround offers some relief for the call-related crashes, it’s not a universal fix, and the blocked message issue on mobile remains a separate concern.
