August 19, 2025 – Despite a flurry of rumors, ChatGPT-4o is not being retired in October, according to OpenAI. Concerns first ignited on Reddit when users interpreted documentation about a GPT-5 rollout as implying model retirements, but the reality is far less concerning.
OpenAI clarified that the launch of GPT-5 only affects how custom GPTs map to new models in workspaces—it does not remove GPT-4o as an option for users in chats. In short, current users can continue selecting their preferred model just as before.
This isn’t the first time user backlash has shaped OpenAI’s approach. After the abrupt GPT-4o removal during the GPT-5 launch, intense negative feedback prompted the company to restore access for Plus subscribers while working on an improved experience.
OpenAI has now committed to greater transparency and advance notifications for any future model retirements—underscoring their awareness of users’ emotional attachments to GPT-4o and similar models.
For the time being, ChatGPT-4o remains fully available to all users—rumors of an imminent October retirement are simply unfounded.
