YouTube is rolling out a threaded comment feature—something Premium subscribers on Android and iOS can now opt into through the YouTube Labs portal. Available until August 14, this experiment reorganizes replies in a hierarchical, Reddit-style format, making it easier to follow conversations by nesting replies under their respective comments.
Early testers noted the update connects the main comment with its replies and even sub-replies, creating a clearer visual thread. This is a refinement over initial trials where replies were loosely linked via avatars. According to YouTube, the aim is to help users read discussions more fluidly by grouping related messages in a single view.
To take part in the experiment, Premium users must enable “Comment Threading” via the “Your Premium Benefits” section of the app or by visiting youtube.com/new on mobile. The feature is currently exclusive to Android and iOS, so users on web or TV platforms won’t see the threaded view.
Reaction among testers is mixed. Many Android Authority and PhoneArena readers praised the change: “Which is a 1,000,000 % upgrade,” while others argue it may not suit everyone unless there’s an option to switch back. Some find the new structure useful for more focused discussions; critics worry it could clutter threads or disrupt familiar layouts.
As a Premium-only experimental feature, it’s unclear whether threading will roll out to all users or remain locked behind a paywall. YouTube hasn’t confirmed future availability or platform expansion—but given the strong response and long-standing demand, there’s speculation it could become a permanent change
This threaded comment test comes amidst other YouTube experiments aimed at Premium users, such as AI-generated Dream Track audio features. The overall strategy seems to give paying users early access to promising additions while gathering targeted feedback before a broader launch
